Review hudud, PAS told

By SIMON KHOO

KUANTAN: PAS should review its policies particularly those involving hudud laws to suit the multi-racial society of Malaysia, MCA central committee member Datuk Ti Lian Ker said.

In taking the cue from the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary constituency by-election, Ti said that Chinese voters had sent a clear signal that they were against PAS’ implementation of hudud laws.

“The majority of the Chinese community are against hudud laws being implemented.

“PAS should take heed and adopt a more liberal policy in line with the country’s plural society,” he said in an interview here.

Ti said, since he issued a statement on the issue as reported in The Star on Jan 16, he had received much feedback.

He said that some people told him to stop harping on the matter and bombarded him with accusations of encroaching into Islam although he was a non-Muslim.

“I appeal to all Muslims not to treat Islam and its teachings as exclusive and kafir (infidels) are forbidden to ask questions.

“Non-Muslims should not be prevented to raise queries or seek answers when they are confused,” he stressed.

Ti said that the intention of PAS to introduce hudud was no secret.

As such, he said that non-Muslims must be allowed and encouraged to seek clarifications so that they could know what was in store for them.

“We should not be bullied into silence.

“The issues and conflicts of law arising from hudud must be open for discussion in a warm and friendly manner to promote better understanding of Islam,” he said.

RM 10,000 for Kuantan Old Folks Homes

NST 2009/01/19
A time of joy and sadness

KUANTAN: The two residents of the home for the aged in Jalan Bukit Ubi are a study in contrasts.
The friendly 92-year-old Wong Pan (picture) is pleased to be celebrating Chinese New Year with his friends at the home for the third time.

Pat Ah Sang, 84, on the other hand, is quiet and rather reserved, though he is trying to get into the spirit of things.

He arrived at the home a week ago and for the first time, he is celebrating Chinese New Year without his family.

To hide his sadness, he kept saying Selamat Hari Raya to the other residents and visitors. Among them was Kuantan MCA chairman Datuk Ti Lian Ker, the menteri besar's special officer in charge of Chinese affairs.
It may be the wrong phrase, but Pat is clear about the meaning of the festivities.

"We'll get ang pow and eat good food."

Wong enjoys the visits, too.

"Many visitors come and we get ang pow and a lot of goodies. I enjoy it here as I have many friends."

Wong lost contact with his daughter after he left his wife more than 20 years ago. He had a son by his first wife in China before he came to Malaya in the 1930s.

On his wishes for this auspicious occasion, Wong said he just wanted to be healthy and happy.

Ti gave the 26 residents of the home ang pow and mandarin oranges.

On behalf of Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, he also presented RM10,000 to the home, which is managed by the Federation of Kuantan Chinese Associations.

Hudud denounced

By SIMON KHOO

KUANTAN: Criminals, particularly rapists, will get away scot free if PAS succeeds in implementing hudud laws in the country, said MCA central committee member Datuk Ti Lian Ker.

Ti, a lawyer, said: “Every offence must be proven by the testimony of two adult male Muslim witnesses of clean background.

“In a case involving a Muslim rapist and a non-Muslim victim, the Muslim rapist may escape persecution if the victim failed to produce adult male Muslim witnesses.

Festive mood: Ti (left) distributing ang pows to senior citizens in Kuantan on Sunday.

“Eye-witness accounts of a rape will not be admitted as evidence if they are not Muslim males.

“This can render justice unattainable and rapists will have a field day. Even non-Muslims have a ready route of escape,” he said after giving out ang pows to senior citizens here recently.

The implementation of hudud laws has been in the limelight with DAP and PAS leaders being involved in disagreements over the issue.

PAS claimed that DAP had a clear understanding of hudud laws and that only Umno was standing in the way of its implementation.

However, DAP national chairman Karpal Singh hit out at PAS leaders saying that the party was not in favour of the move as “Malaysia was and still is a secular country.”

Ti, who is also Kuantan MCA division chief, said that PAS leaders should give a detailed explanation to non-Muslims on the aspect of legislation.

“Even if hudud is applicable only to Muslims, there will be an impact on the social and legal scenarios.

“We are already facing conflicts between civil and syariah laws involving non-Muslim families when one party converts to Islam,” he stressed.

Ti said, in Saudi Arabia and Iran, hudud laws were the law of the land and applicable to all citizens including non-Muslims.

“There is no guarantee that the first step will not lead us into troubled waters.

“Already, Malaysians are divided by race, religion and culture. Hudud will tear us apart and Malaysians will be burdened with legal conflicts,” he said.

Hudud and qisas offences are contained in legislation known as the Syariah Criminal Code Enactment under hudud laws. Theft, robbery, illicit sex, alcohol consumption and apostasy are considered as offences.

The punishment for these offences are corporal in nature involving whipping, stoning to death and amputation of limbs.

Qisas (law of retaliation) refers to offences that involve bodily injury or loss of life.

The punishment is death or imprisonment, but compensation in the form of money or property is accepted if the guardian of the victim forgives the offender.

Dear Committee Members and friends,

PAHANG CREATED A HISTORY BY WINNING THE FIRST GOLD MEDAL IN MALAYSIAN INTER-STATE BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Johnathan Chan, who is a member of the national youth squad, did not disappoint his coaches when he romped home a comfortable victory to give Pahang its first gold medal with a six-game total of 1319. Chan finished 56 pins clear of his nearest rival to win his first individual gold medal. Perak's Muhammad Amin Abdul Razak set the early pace with a 244 opening game but a poor second game dropped him out of contention while Kedah's Ahmad Muaz Bin Mohd Fishol took over the running. A superb 243 from Chan saw the 18-year-old youngster closing in on the leaders. Another 224 and 255 in the fourth and fifth games allowed Chan to take over the lead and stretching his margin to 77 pins before the final game. Despite just scoring 189, Chan was able to fend off his rivals for the victory. Penang's Khoo Beng Khai stormed home to claim the silver medal with 1263 ahead of another strong finisher, Yusuf Abdul Raof of Wilayah Persekutuan taking home the bronze medal with 1258.

In the girl's division, Negeri Sembilan's Lim Hsu Zen upstaged some of the national youths favourites to clinch the gold medal with 1174. Dear Committee Members and friends,

PAHANG ADDED ONE GOLD AND ONE SLIVER IN THE YOUTH DIVISION
13th January, P.Jaya. Tunku Haifaa and Farah Izzazaya shot 372, 412 and 401 to take over the running with Sabah and Selangor in close company. Selangor's pair took over the lead from the Pahang pair after the fifth game but only led by 1 pin.

A poor 352 from the Selangor duo allowed our Pahang's girls to snatch the gold medal with 2287 while Selangor settled for the silver with 2281, just 6 pins adrift. Selangor's second pair claimed the bronze medal with 2264

Singles Gold medalist, Johnathan Chan partnering national youth, Rodson Tong of Pahang got off to a good start with 425 to take the lead but were quickly overtaken by Selangor's Tengku Muhd and Mohd Shafiq after the second game. A superb 475 from Mohd Haziq and reigning national champion, Fahmi Bahri shot the Johor pair into the front at the halfway mark. The national youth duo continued to lead but found their lead reduced to 11 pins going into the sixth and final game. Although they managed to knock down 401, fortunately the chasing our Pahang pair could only score 405 to give Johor the gold medal. Mohd Haziq and Fahmi Bahri triumphed with a total of 2449, only 7 pins ahead of Pahang, who totaled 2442 settled for the Silver medal.

660 Old Folks Happy Hours At MB's Residence...

Kuantan MCA had in a period of two weeks registered 660 Kuantan Warga Emas to have a meal and receive ang pow and hampers in conjuntion of the coming Chinese New Year. This is our annual event but in the past we had organised the event at the road-side of Wisma MCA Jln Bt.Ubi. I noticed the participants were annoyed, impatient, restless and agitated. Can't blame them as some of them were sick and the roadside was definitely far from comfortable.

This year we have decided to bring our Warga Emas to MB's residence and provide them with meals and first class hospitality. The folks were extremely happy and appreciative. One of them came to me with happiness and elations all over his face. He said this is the first time in his lifetime, he had stepped into MB's official residence. All this while he only passed by. During Raya Open House, most people brought their kids but not their parents. Another aged 80+ came to me and proudly declared that he has been a Life Member of MCA and had wanted to see me and encouraged me on my work all this while. He told me not to be disheartened..I was indeed touched by his sincerity....So...on this occasion, they were our VIP guest in conjunction with the coming Chinese New Year and the SPIRIT of RESPECT FOR THE ELDERS LIVES ON..THIS SPIRIT NEED TO BE INCULCATED AND REPEATEDLY REMINDED....

A VERY BIG THANK YOU TO YANG AMAT BERHURMAT DATO SERI ADNAN YAACOB FOR HIS KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY. INDEED WE HAD MADE THEIR DAY....

Registration of the Urban Poor In Kuantan Town.

The MCA Kuantan Welfare Bureau had requested the Majlis Perbandaran Kuantan Officers to visit a few "hard core poor'" families in Kg. Sg Soi . Though they may be poor but I was taken by their sincerity and happiness upon seeing us. There is no complains...no demand...no anger..no frustration...unlike many who are healthier and wealthier.
Besides assisting the MPK to register and assist these hard core urban poor, we have also decided to employ a former temporary teacher . He had been jobless for three years when his service was terminated upon reaching 35 years old . Being a polio victim , he had little options. We are pleased to employ him to assist us at the Divisional office.
Besides praying, let's give some time and thoughts to the poor....some compassion...

Pahang Heroes!

National youth from Pahang, Johnathan Chan opened with s superb 255 to lead reigning national champion and national youth, Fahmi Bahri from Johor in second with 235 and another national youth from Pahang, Rodson Tong third. The burly Rodson took over the running after the second game and led until newly-crowned Youth Boy's Open champion, Aris Ardila Santosh fired 235 and 278 in games four and five to surge into the front of the pack.
It was all Aris in the second half of the 10-game finals as the 17-year-old national youth squad member from Miri fired all cylinders stretching his lead from 79 pins at the halfway mark to end the finals on a total of 2208 and 130 pins from his nearest rival. Johnathan Chan and Rodson Tong, who traded second on several occasions, ended in the same order with Chan taking second on 2078 and Rodson third on 2053.
